Yogi Tea :: Recipe & Benefits

One of my favorite parts of yoga class in Austin TX at Yoga Yoga was the tea served afterwards. Each studio had a kitchen and when the tea was cooking, the whole place smelled of deliciously happy holidays of spice.  Cinnamon, clove & cardamom aromas drifted through the air and softly brought you back from a quiet-filled rejuvenating savasana.  Sipping the sweet nectar of yogi tea after practice enhanced the benefits of class and held my mind’s hand as we continued to travel down the inward path of sublime calm.  I was hooked.  I began to make the tea at home and have constantly had a batch on hand for the past 5 years.  The benefits are undeniable and the invitation to deeper peace within is irresistible.  I raise my cup to all of our health and to living a life full of joy & appreciation. YOGI TEA

:: makes 1 quart ::

1 qt water
1/2 tsp whole black peppercorns
1/2 tsp whole cloves
1 tsp green cardamom pods – cracked open
1.5 cinnamon sticks
1 oz ginger root – sliced (optional)

Combine all ingredients and bring to boil. Turn down heat to medium low and let simmer for 10 minutes to 1 hour. Turn off heat and add 1/4 bag of black tea. Let steep for 5 minutes to 24 hours depending on desired strength.  The longer you simmer and the longer you steep, the stronger the flavor and the effects of the tea.  Personally I simmer for 2 hours and then steep for 24 hours to get the most robust, spicy flavors and the height of the ingredients benefits. It can be stored in the refrigerator or even frozen. Heat, add milk & honey to serve.

Ayurvedically a tri-doshic drink.
